National Singles Day began with celebrations in its founding city of West Hollywood, California.

Thanks to the support of our supporters, advocates and fans, the City of West Hollywood, our generous partners, sponsors and participating merchants, we were able to kick off the holiday with large-scale events at popular venues to get us up and on the map. Everyone – singles and couples alike – enjoyed a full afternoon and evening of entertainment, giveaways, awards, recognition and acknowledgement in honor of savvy singles everywhere.

What is a Singles Day celebration made of? Everything from entertainment, giveaways, celebrity guests and raffles to guest speakers, gift bags, specialty cocktails, and Single Star Awards for individuals or organizations who have advocated for singles and singles issues online, on air or in the media.

In 2016, the City of West Hollywood issued a Proclamation making National Singles Day an official West Hollywood holiday – the very first city in the U.S. to do so! Huge props to then city council member John Duran for making it happen.

Local merchants participated by hosting events, donating giveaways, gift bag goodies, raffle and auction items, and by offering in-store specials, many of them good throughout the entire month!

Host a Singles Day event in your city! Here’s a little inspiration…
Karen speakingThe very first National Singles Day celebration was organized by a single woman – one person, like you – with a big idea and a little perseverance. It’s as simple as reaching out – to local businesses restaurants, bars, clubs, shops – any organization that might be interested in hosting a Singles Day event or offering a Singles Day special in honor of the big day. When you can bring customers they might not otherwise have had, you create a win-win event, for them, and for you.

Parks and other public places are great alternatives as well.  A picnic, BBQ or party is a perfect way to get a group of singles and their coupled friends (we like to call them “single allies”) together for a day of celebration and gratitude, without the typical pressures to either bring a date or have one. You can check with your local City Hall to see what facilities they might be able to make available. Once you have a venue in mind, you can reach out to community businesses for donations of food and drink, items for giveaways or raffles, plus contact potential entertainers and speakers.

National Singles Day is a fantastic speaking opportunity for city or community leaders, who will welcome the opportunity to talk to their constituents in support of the holiday. Your City Hall and local Chamber of Commerce are excellent resources for finding out who’s available and interested. The possibilities for creating an engaging and successful Singles Day celebration are literally endless – use your imagination – and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! You’ll be surprised how many people are interested in supporting a national holiday for singles and will be happy to help out.

If you’re planning an event, let us know – we’re here to help promote and get the word out via our web site and social media network.
